Its main feature is the vast Kerr Lake, also known as Buggs Island Lake, which provides a haven for boating, fishing, and water recreation enthusiasts. The area is rich in natural beauty, with lush forests surrounding the water, offering habitats for diverse wildlife such as bald eagles and white-tailed deer. Established in 1981, the recreation area provides an extensive range of recreational activities, including more than a dozen campgrounds spread around the lake.
